Think of all the sights, sounds and tastes found on Collins Avenue, Miami’s 21km artery running from South Point Beach to Sunny Isles Beach.
Some of the most famous restaurants, galleries and Art Deco hotels preserved from the mid-twentieth century are on that street. Some of the most famous entertainers, mobsters and politicians have dined on that street. The vibrant life and style of Miami was born on that street. To this day, Collins Avenue is the centre of Miami’s universe and the orientation point for new visitors.
Now, for a street that goes through more than 10 neighbourhoods, there is obviously an abundance of things to experience, but the top three must-sees are:
Hotel – Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort
Built in 1968, Newport Beachside has welcomed some of entertainment’s finest including Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix and Sammy Davis Jr. Since then, the hotel has undergone numerous renovations including an update to its lobby, restaurant, guest rooms and pool deck; but, the historic structure and ambiance remains untouched.
One of its most inviting features is complimentary guest access to Sunny Isles’ famous fishing pier which is 236 meters long and includes a Beach Bar with a lifeguard observation deck.
Restaurant – SUSHISAMBA
Omg the flavours! Peruvian, Brazilian and Japanese fused dishes are at the core of this South Beach hotspot on Lincoln Road Mall. Its energy and colourful interior and exterior (big orange umbrellas surround the outdoor seating on the Mall’s promenade) make it stand out in the bustling Miami scene.
And, let’s not forget about the food! Try the Rock Shrimp Tempura mixed with golden pea shoots, snap pea julienne, spicy mayonnaise and black truffle vinaigrette. Anything including shrimp and the word “truffle” is guaranteed to be drool worthy.
Attraction – Museum of Ice Cream
Free samples! Those words alone are lure enough into this pop-up museum.
Found in only three locations in the entire world – San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami – the museum is a hot pink maze of unique rooms that include a sprinkle pool (self explanatory); a vintage ice cream bar; giant ice cream cones (not edible) and a banana split swing (also not edible); but, the free samples are very edible!
