On the Road: Driving Across the U.S., Part 3

IMG_1264With a little over a month left of the road trip, I have managed to drive through the East Coast without any major problems…knock on wood. It has been an interesting experience to say the least. I have learned many things about driving, travelling and life in general while on the road, but, what I want to do with this post is focus on some interesting facts about the destinations I have been to so far.

Boston, MA: There is more than one Harvard in Boston. One is a town in the city’s west end and the other is a prestigious university in Cambridge. They are on two opposite ends of the city so don’t get them confused or you will be in for a surprise.

Cape Cod, MA: It is believed that Cape Cod has some of the best whale watching tours in the world. People from all over the planet come to Cape Cod, particularly Provincetown, to get up close and personal with the whales (not literally…they stay on a ship and take pictures…but still).

New York City, NY: Brooklyn is not as scary as it has been portrayed in the news or in raps songs. It is actually quite serene. Brooklyn Heights, the area where the Cosby Show was set, is right over the Brooklyn Bridge. It features tree-lined streets, historic statues and buildings, and pedestrian walkways…not at all like the images I conjured up in my head.

Atlantic City, NJ: The oceanfront Boardwalk in Atlantic City was NOT destroyed by Hurricane Sandy like so many people believe. The truth is, the part of the boardwalk that was damaged, and repeatedly shown on the news, was in the residential area of Absecon Inlet.

Virginia Beach, VA: The story of Pocahontas comes from Virginia Beach, more specifically Jamestown. The area features the Powhatan Indian village and is where the first English colony was built. It is also where Pocahontas and John Smith fell in love!

Myrtle Beach, SC: Vanna White’s hometown is in North Myrtle Beach! When she visits, she usually goes to Hoskins, a ‘truly southern’ restaurant, for dinner. I went there…didn’t see her though.

Atlanta, GA: The TBS broadcasting station aka the Superstation aka Peachtree TV is headquartered in Atlanta. The station is a 15 minute drive from Peachtree Road. Do you see the connections there?

Walt Disney World, FL: The big sphere inside of the Epcot theme park is actually called Spaceship Earth…many people think that it’s called the Epcot Center. The dome is considered to be the most recognizable structure of any theme park and is 50 meters in diameter.

Stay tuned for more interesting facts on the upcoming destinations including Palm Beach, Miami, New Orleans and Amarillo.
